Applying research to teaching: Consolidating teaching to research

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

As a linguist and language educator, I find it essential to translate research outcomes into classroom implementation. In this sharing, I first briefly describe an unsuccessful and a successful FDS proposal, exploring why one works and why the other does not, potentially due to applicability.
I will also report on the progress of my current project, "Teaching Undergraduate Social Sciences and Business Writing: Integrating the Reader’s Perspective and Data-driven Teaching and Learning Approach". This initiative seeks to utilise students' previous work to enhance data-driven language instruction. I explicate the process of formulating discipline-specific language guides for written assessments and the development of workshops to promote practical engagement with web-based corpus tools for discovery and self-guided learning.

The presentation concludes with a reflection on present challenges and a call for collaboration with subject-specific lecturers. The objectives of this collaboration include: (i) broadening the development of teaching and learning (T&L) materials across various disciplines, and (ii) promoting the use of corpus tools among colleagues to analyse student-written data, thereby enabling an empirical evaluation of their performance and learning needs.
