Description
Effective Teaching Method:(1) To ensure that students can perform well for the examination question related to the complex numerical calculation of pay leave specified in employment ordinance, the practice of numerical calculation was included in the individual assignment. In so doing, I could assess students’ level of understanding about the holiday leave calculation taught in lecture.
(2) Intensive use of Poll Everywhere to promote active learning
- To motivate students to stay engaged, I always used Poll Everywhere to interact with my students
For example, I Invite students to answer multiple choice and open-ended questions at Poll everywhere. Their responses at Polly Everywhere were counted as part of their marks of in-class exercises. Students were very responsive to this channel. More than 80% of my students were highly active in completing the questions posted at Poll Everywhere in order to get higher marks for in-class exercise.
(3) Youtube videos, daily-life examples and short questions were also introduced to help students understand the theoretical concepts and to nurture students’ proplem-solving skills for making feasible recommendations.
(4) Provide more in-class review exercises to help students to recap the fundamental concepts.
(5) Provided additional support/consultation for students to complete their group projects as students reported that they felt difficult to apply appropriate theory for their group projects.
Based on the SFQ feedback, this course could be further improved in the following ways:
(1) Improve the coherency of the learning topics to make students feel easier to understand and to enhance their application ability. For example, the teaching of chapter 5 job evaluation is suggested to be arranged after chapter 3 internal alignment as some concepts of these two chapters are associated among them.
(2) Revision review was provided at the last lecture of this course to recap some important learning concepts. Students reflected that they highly appreciated this review section which was very useful for them to the preparation of the examination.
(3) To help students who are weak in mathematical calculation of leave pay in employment ordinance, the revision session should spend more time to highlight the important concepts and calculation steps as students may forget these important concepts.
(4) Provide group report sample for students to help student know the required standard of getting an excellent grade.
(5) The daily-life examples for theoretical explanation are suggested to be clearly stated in the power point. In so doing, students find it easier to associate the examples with the respective theory in compensation. They also reported that the examples I provided are very useful.
