Description
As distance and hybrid learning continue to evolve in higher education, fostering meaningful student engagement remains a central pedagogical challenge. This talk examines how technology‑enhanced learning environments can support student engagement across behavioural, cognitive, and emotional dimensions, with particular attention to multimodal design and interactive digital practices. Drawing on qualitative evidence from higher education contexts in Hong Kong, the presentation explores how digital platforms and multimodal learning activities facilitate participation, collaboration, and reflective learning in blended and distance settings. The talk highlights how features such as asynchronous interaction, multimedia representation, and peer‑generated content contribute to social presence and a sense of learning community. It also discusses common challenges, including uneven participation, cognitive overload, and varying levels of digital literacy, and how these can be addressed through thoughtful instructional design and scaffolding.
By synthesising research findings and classroom‑based insights, this presentation offers practical implications for educators and instructional designers seeking to enhance student engagement. The talk concludes by proposing design principles for creating inclusive, student‑centred, and engaging learning experiences in higher education contexts.
