Abstract:

Recent research predicts that the continued progress in digitising information and advances in artificial intelligence will radically change the workforce by automating many jobs. To maintain job relevance and support future career transitions, individuals will require highly developed self-regulated learning (SRL) skills. Despite the well-documented benefits of SRL skills, the numerous opportunities students have in higher education institutions to explore, practice and hone them, SRL skills remain underdeveloped. The reason for this may lie in the fact that learners seldom have access to personalised feedback that can effectively support the development of SRL skills.

Learning analytics holds a strong potential to address these limitations in SRL. In this talk, we will first explore how instrumentation of existing learning technologies can be improved to support effective measurement of SRL. We will then discuss different modelling approaches that can be used for analysis of SRL. Finally, we will talk about analytics-based approaches that can be used to enhance SRL. The talk will present online tools, built upon well-known learning management systems, that can readily be used to measure and support SRL in research and practice.
