Description
This talk describes a case of the instructor’s (i.e., the speaker) planning, delivering and evaluating the use of corpus-based language pedagogy (CBLP) (Ma et al., 2022) in the advanced English academic writing classroom for undergraduate social sciences students in a Hong Kong tertiary institution. The CBLP approaches were adopted in two cycles (Summer 2020 and Fall 2021) in two different modes of delivery (online and hybrid respectively). The approaches aim to equip students with corpus consultation skills for language learning, in particular, learning the linguistic features embodying the academic register, e.g., complex noun phrase structure, nominalization, modality and evaluative language. In the talk, I will explain a sample lesson plan and demonstrate a short lesson on identifying common adjectives for expressing evaluation (e.g. it is + adjective + to; find it + adjective). Through the demonstration, I will evaluate the implementation of the lesson with the participants, and compare the participants’ reflections with the findings from the two cycles in the case study. To conclude the seminar, I will discuss the adoption of CBLP in relation to concepts such as technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) and recommend corpus tools and activities adaptive to students’ capability and needs, in order to increase their motivation to engage in autonomous language learning under teachers’ guidance.Period | 16 Nov 2022 |
