Subject Leader of LCS2347 Language and Gender for Division of Languages and Communication

Activity: Other

Description

As the Subject Leader for LCS2347 Language and Gender, I am responsible for the academic coordination, instructional quality, and pedagogical integrity of the subject across all offered sections. My core contributions and responsibilities include:

-Subject Development and Innovation: As Subject Leader, I have initiated the integration of innovative pedagogical approaches through the application of generative AI and multimodal learning tools. Two major initiatives have been introduced into the course design:

In collaboration with Dr. Natasa Lackovic (Senior Lecturer, Lancaster University) and Dr. Vera Sun (SSHD), we worked on a comic strip-based project that juxtaposes gender narratives from 1990s magazines with present-day representations. By crafting characters and dialogues that reflect shifting gender ideologies, students are encouraged to critically analyze historical and contemporary discourses, promoting deeper engagement with the course themes through multimodal and narrative-based learning.

In collaboration with Dr. Angela Tam (LC) and Dr. Simon Chung (SSHD), we introduced a teacher-trained AI chatbot into the classroom to support students in developing research questions on gender and sexuality. This initiative aims to:

1) Evaluate the effectiveness of generative AI in enhancing student engagement and motivation in research formulation.

2) Examine the role of AI-mediated scaffolding in promoting critical thinking about gender ideologies and improving AI literacy.

Both initiatives have been formalized into proposals for the CPCE Research Grant and the CPCE Teaching Research / Excellence Fund and are currently under review.

-Liaison and Reporting: Acting as the key contact between the subject team and the Division, ensuring clear communication of teaching arrangements, assessment matters, and reporting requirements.

-Curriculum Oversight: Ensuring that the syllabus, learning outcomes, and weekly content are current, coherent, and aligned with program objectives and institutional standards.

-Assessment Design and Review: Designing, reviewing, and approving assessment tasks to ensure fairness, clarity, and alignment with the course's intended learning outcomes.

-Visiting Lecturers Support and Coordination: Providing pedagogical and administrative guidance to visiting lecturers, facilitating coordination meetings, and ensuring consistent teaching and assessment practices.

-Quality Assurance: Monitoring student performance, gathering and responding to feedback, and working with moderators to uphold academic standards.
