From Prompt to Purpose: The Role of Generative AI in Fostering Critical Engagement in Gender and Sexuality Research Education

Project Details

Layman's description

This project is grounded in two complementary theoretical frameworks: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Engagement Theory. SDT, as articulated by Ryan and Deci (2000), underscores the significance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness — three core psychological needs that fuel intrinsic motivation and contribute to deeper, more sustained student engagement. Engagement Theory (Kearsley & Shneiderman, 1998) aligns with this by emphasizing the value of active participation and collaborative learning, especially when students are involved in tasks that feel purposeful and socially meaningful. Drawing on these perspectives, the project investigates how generative AI might serve as a pedagogical tool to support students in critically and intersectionally engaging with gender ideologies in gender and sexuality studies courses.
