Abstract

Following the rapid development of China and Hong Kongs change in sovereignty in 1997, Putonghua (PTH) was introduced into schools as a selective subject in 1984 and became a core subject in both the primary and secondary school curricula in 1998. Today, 4080 min of PTH class per week is typically offered to students in primary (grade 16) and secondary (grade 710) schools regardless of whether Putonghua is adopted as the medium of instruction for teaching the Chinese Language Subject (PMIC).
