Abstract
This chapter explores the evolution and role of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted chatbots in mental health care, with a particular focus on their relevance to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The chapter introduces a conceptual model of the various types of chatbots, providing examples of their clinical applications, and examines how AI is embedded within these systems. It also discusses the potential opportunities and risks associated with AI-assisted chatbots, such as improving accessibility to care while addressing concerns around ethical use and reliability. The chapter concludes by identifying research directions for further integrating chatbots into CBT, emphasising their potential to complement traditional therapeutic approaches and expand access to mental health services.
