Abstract

"Book of 20" is a study of the 2 architecture programmes Bachelor of Social Sciences (Architectural Studies) and Master of Architecture offered by School of Architecture, CUHK. The time span of the study is over 20 years, from the founding of the Department of Architecture in 1990 to the present year 2012. The study is on one hand an archival exercise, which collects, sorts and classifies the artifacts, and as well a sketch project, which conjecture something intangible and profile something unexplored.

The core of the study is "Programme - People". Programme and People are the 2 inseparable bodies which form a School. An investigation of the 2 architecture programmes through Curriculum - Course - Project - Work was exercised, which involved the division of the 20 years into 4 phases according to the 4 periods of chairmanship.

From this study, we try to project the possible answer of this enquiry: "from WHAT (curriculum, courses, projects), CU ARCH educates WHAT kind of architects/graduates". The two WHATs are dependent, responsive and interactive to each other, and interestingly they are never constant but variables. Throughout the years, they have been evolving in an organic process, which was at the same time driven by the combinations of tutors, the specific articulation of the projects, the emphasis of certain architectural issues and the mode of delivery.
