Design and Implementation of Electric Vehicle Transport Systems: Cases of Metropolises in Asia- Pacific

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The continuous upgrade and development of the transport system in the Asia-Pacific has fostered economic growth, social mobility, and urban development leveraging the constant technological development of conventional vehicles, mass-transport systems, and vessels. However, in recent years, the severe impact of climate change and public health has led to the urgent demand for transport industries to design and transform into a more sustainable system powered by electricity, especially with the implementation of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and Internet of Things, to reduce carbon emissions and improve measurable sustainability performance. This chapter aims to identify how transport systems have evolved in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on the prevailing development of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging facilities supplemented by new mass transportation systems. Case studies of metropolises, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Sydney, are analysed to investigate the progress, opportunities, and challenges in this vibrant cluster of economies composed of both significant manufacturers and consumers of EVs. It also reveals pertinent public policies and future directions of an electrified transport system.
