Enhancing english writing through information and communication technology: Success and constraints

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Previous research suggests that computer-assisted language learning (CALL) can facilitate communication, increase oral discussion, develop the writing/thinking connection, improve writing skills, enhance student motivation and reduce anxiety (Cooper & Selfe, 1990; Huot, Lemonnier, & Hamers, 2008; Kern, 1995; Pratt & Sullivan, 1994; Sullivan, 1993; Warschauer, 1996 & 2006; Warschauer, Arada, & Zheng, 2010; Warschauer, Turbee, & Robers, 1996). However, the results may not apply to other types of educational institutions. This paper explores how the use of computermediated communication can help motivate Hong Kong tertiary students to learn and improve their English writing. The design and the implementation of effective online tasks are elaborated in this paper. Although there are some constraints in enhancing English writing through computer-mediated communication in the Hong Kong context, the success of online writing tasks consolidated ICT's position in English writing. The results of the research reflected that the online writing tasks could enhance students' motivation in English learning and their writing performance.
