Abstract

“Among various architectural typologies, the hostel is an open-ended accommodation that allows people around the world to come and go. It is an excellent place for sharing creativity and culture.”

The exhibition showcases designs of hostels which focus on revitalizing the old communities. Some older districts like Sheung Wan, Yau Ma Tei and Sham Shui Po still retain their characters and memories of the old Hong Kong. There are many stories awaiting to be explored. However, the urge for redevelopment gradually erodes the spirit of these local communities.

Tourism has always been considered important in promoting cross-cultural understanding, exchange and diversity. Hostels can blend into the neighborhood of the local community. Travelers can immerse themselves to explore local customs and traditions. New opportunities open up to local businesses. This unique chemistry enriches the experience of the traveler and helps revitalize the community as well.
