Abstract

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, “Jockey Club Project Well-being: PLACE-MAKING in Schools” worked with 31 schools in Hong Kong to create school environments that support well-being through participatory design.

School life can be joyful and fulfilling, yet it can sometimes be overwhelming, and a school is like a student’s second home. In order to make this home a better and happier place, the project team listened to ~1,000 students and ~400 teachers about their needs and co-designed creative solutions with them: from farming garden and well-being hub to kitten café, mindfulness corner, enhanced play zones and canteens, etc.

The process entailed a series of design thinking and participatory design workshops hosted by passionate designers and architects who have true faith in human centric design, and students and teachers were empowered to take up an active role in the shaping of their own school environment.

For the 15 schools in year 1, designs were realized and constructed; for the other 16 schools in year 2, design drawings and proposals were furnished. The resulting range of campus makeovers or proposals were not only meaningful or beautiful, but also addressed authentic needs in well-being, personal growth, emotions and learning, creating positive impacts on educational processes.
