Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Pilgrimage tourism is gaining more attention in tourism literature in the past decade. Most of the studies focused on exploring the motivation of tourists visiting destinations where their religion originated. This study aims to explore the motivation of tourists visiting local religious sites in lower devotion cities which is not promoted for tourists' visitation. Adopting qualitative research methods, participation observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection. The findings of this study contribute to the current literature in pilgrimage tourism and provide insights for tourism bodies in determining elements of religious sites for the development of new tourism attractions in non-secular destinations.
