Abstract

The flow characteristics of premixed impinging flames with induced swirl were studied using PIV visualization technique. Operating at the same nozzletoplate distance of H/d = 5 and Reynolds number of Re = 1500, flow patterns of the impinging jets with and without the induction of a swirling flow were visualized and compared. Tests were also conducted for the impinging air jet with induced swirl at different Reynolds numbers of 800, 1300 and 1800, with a nozzletoplate distance of H/d = 5. The induced swirl led to higher turbulentmixing of the flow and more uniform heat transfer on the impingement plate. In addition, by increasing the Reynolds number of the impinging flow, generation of local turbulences and rapid mixing of the flow were observed, which resulted in enhanced heat flux at the impingement plate.
